ichael Jackson slept in one, many models and athletes use them to make themselves look younger, healthier and stronger. So what is this fountain of youth treatment that so many in the entertainment industry turn to? Will it make you look and feel younger? Will it make you stronger? Is it medical hocus pocus, or does it really have an application. What I’m talking about is hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have FDA approved uses for many medical conditions. Hyperbaric therapy also has some non- approved uses, and many of these uses are still under investigation for their effectiveness.

Hyperbaric therapy or treatment is the medical use of oxygen at a higher percentage or concentration than that of atmospheric oxygen that we breathe. This administration of 100 percent oxygen is delivered at a controlled pressure (higher than sea level), within a specialized chamber, for a prescribed amount of time depending on the treatment needed.

The theory of HBO therapy is based on the fact that when increasing the pressure of the air we breathe, HBO therapy can dramatically increase the number of oxygen molecules entering the bloodstream, up to 2000 percent. With this dramatic increase in pressure, oxygen can get to bone and tissue that is normally not accessible to red blood cells, thus aiding in the healing process by stimulating new tissue growth.

Hyperbaric therapy has intrigued many practitioners and has been used in varying degrees since the late 1800’s without acceptance by the larger mainstream medical community. It was not until 1962, after an article was published touting the benefits of HBO in carbon monoxide poisoning, that HBO started to gain worldwide interest. Shortly after, hyperbaric facilities were installed at many large scale medical centers nationally and internationally. In the late 1970’s, the Undersea Medical Society developed guidelines for HBO therapy usage. Consequently, many studies were conducted for the use of HBO therapy for other disorders or conditions associated with acute burns and for skin grafts. The positive results of these studies helped pave the way for the restorative application of HBO therapy for these conditions.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a beneficial application in clinical practice, and there is documented efficacy. People who have been exposed to a high degree of carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness “bends” have been treated successfully with hyperbaric therapy. With these conditions respectively, HBO attempts to accelerate the release of the carbon monoxide from the hemoglobin in the red blood cell, and reduce the bubble size of the inert gas, thus hyperoxygenate tissues. Many patients with severe thermal burns or compromised skin grafts or flaps have had positive outcomes from HBO therapy. Diabetic patients are prone to chronic foot/ leg ulcers that do not heal. Numerous studies have shown that HBO therapy has markedly reduced the need for amputation in these patients.

Will HBO therapy make a person look or feel younger? There is absolutely no proof that HBO will turn back the hands of time despite popular belief. HBO therapy has been used indiscriminately for this purpose by many gullible consumers for some time now. Inappropriate use of HBO for a myriad of medical ailments by practitioners searching for a "cure-all" therapy resulted in scrutiny from the medical community, once again ruining the credibility of hyperbaric medicine. Does HBO therapy have the potential to make an individual stronger? No. HBO improves oxygenation to damaged muscles and tissues, again there is no evidence that supports this claim.
